Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to foreign nationals.


There are certain basic qualifications for becoming a naturalized citizen of the US. as well as certain requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act.


Applicants must:

  • be permanent residents of the US
  • ​be at least 18 years old or a child under 18 whose biological or adoptive parents became citizens
  • ​have a green card for at least 5 years or be married to a US citizen for at least 3 years and have permanent lawful resident status for 3 years
  • ​not have lived outside the US for more than 6 months (with some exceptions)  
  • speak, read, and write English (with some exceptions)
  • ​display a basic knowledge of US history and government by passing a citizenship test
  • be a person of good moral character
  • not have been convicted of certain crimes (contact our office for a complete list)


​Naturalization can also be achieved if:

  • You have qualifying service in the U.S. armed forces and meet all other eligibility requirements
  • You are a U.S. citizen and your child was born outside the U.S., your child is currently residing outside the U.S., and all other eligibility requirements are met



​The English language or citizenship test requirements can be waved for individuals over 55 who have lived in the US over 20 years.


Note: You may already be a U.S. citizen and not need to apply for naturalization if your biological or adoptive parent(s) became a U.S. citizen before you reached the age of 18.
